My Favorite Foundations!

104_5882
Lately I have had a number of foundation reviews. The reason being is that I am always in search of the perfect foundation. I have very fair, pale freckly skin (yes, a lot of sun damage) and most companies have not catered to this type up to until now. For years I would buy a foundation and groan when it would oxidize on my skin (turn orange) and then I would have to return it. I used to work for the wonderful Prescriptives, that luckily had such a great shade range but soon companies started to realize that there was a shade range between medium: ultra light and really dark.
So, today I am going to discuss five of my current favorite foundations. Some of them might be drugstore and some are likely to be high end. You don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune on a good foundation with the technology that is available today. Drugstore companies spend a good amount of money coming up with a good product. They know that a majority of women will spend money on makeup while shopping around for their prescriptions.

Let’s start in 5th place. Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse is my 5th favorite. I’m torn because I really like this one. It provides the coverage that makes you look like you have airbrushed skin. My only caveat is that the color is slightly too dark for me during the autumn and winter months. You only need a pump or two to cover the entire face and I use a Beautyblender sponge to blend it out. Love this!

Next is L’Oreal’s True Match LUMI. I liked True Match a lot and this is really nice because not only does it provide nice coverage, the color matching it superb and it gives an ethereal glow. Bonus! Who doesn’t want a nice glow? This isn’t the best choice for those with very oily skin, obviously, but if your skin is normal-oily, give it a try. Again, I apply with a Beautyblender sponge and use two pumps to get all over coverage. In 3rd place in Urban Decay’s Naked Skin foundation. This is such a nice foundation. It is supposed to give the illusion that there isn’t any foundation on the skin, thus the name Naked Skin, but you do feel there is some. I found that I need two pumps to get good coverage and I use the Beautyblender sponge with it. It goes on very matte and pretty much stays on matte throughout the day. That is nice, especially in the summer. They do have a pretty helpful number system on the website to help pick out your number if you don’t have an Urban Decay counter near you. My review of the foundation is here: http://iamthemakeupjunkie.blogspot.com/2012/08/review-urban-decay-naked-skin-foundation.html.

Okay, we are getting pretty close to foundation nirvana here. For me it’s a toss up between this one and the next one. Why? because it honestly depends on what you need in a foundation that day. Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat foundation gives the ultimate in coverage, airbrushed look and skin perfection. Just a little bit does the trick. Apply with fingers or a sponge (I always use the Beautyblender). It depends on which you are comfortable with. A little goes a long way, which is nice because this foundation is expensive, $55.00! My review of this heavenly creation is here: http://iamthemakeupjunkie.blogspot.com/2012/07/the-stuff-you-need-le-teint-touche.html.

And finally, if you are looking for the most natural coverage, Giorgio Armani’s Maestro foundation is for you. Just 3-4 drops of this “elixir” will give your face a natural glow, natural coverage and throughout the day it changes from matte to a satiny finish. It retails for $62.00, which is quite steep. However, you only use just a few drops and you apply with your fingers, not a sponge. It does take getting used to. I do really like this one and the buzz surrounding it is not for naught. I have heard some say that they didn’t like the coverage, that they felt they had to use more to get any coverage. So, there is some difference of opinion on how well it works for them. Be forewarned. If you do want to drop this much on foundation you need to know the facts. Here is my review: http://iamthemakeupjunkie.blogspot.com/2012/09/review-giorgio-armani-maestro-fusion.html.

I hope you enjoyed my take on my favorite five foundations. I have a few more, so I could have probably gone to 10 of them! I would love to hear comments. Thanks and be beautiful!

  1. I'm glad you posted this, because I was going to ask you for foundation recommendations today. I've never used foundation before, but think it's time I started. My face is normal to oily, with the oil in the T zone. I do get dry skin pieces on my nose, that cause makeup to look caked on. I'm working on keeping that away by using a good exfoliator. Right now that skin is looking very fresh and free of dead skin. Now I want to move on to creating a good base.

  2. Amber, exfoliation is key. Otherwise the flakes will show up and look awful. How much do you want to spend? Do you want a foundation to last all day, such as a waterproof one? I have tried so many and have at least 100 here that I can give you recommendations on! What skincare are you using?

  3. I use a foaming cleanser, then I alternate between a warming, deep cleansing mask and an exfoliating mask. They are all from The Body Shop. I also grabbed a self-adjusting, tinted foundation from there this week. It is called BB Creme.

Most of my makeup is from MAC, so I'm willing to pay a fair bit for good makeup. The problem is just not wanting to pay a hefty amount for makeup that I end up hating.

I do like long-lasting makeup, as long as it isn't going to kill my skin. Since I completely changed my diet in February, I've had clear skin for the first time in 20+ years. I want to keep it that way!

I'm very low maintenance on skin care, and won't keep up with a regime that I have to do every night.

  4. I know I'm very late on this, but I'll put my .2 in if I may. I've recently gone back to liquid foundation after giving it up for about 20 yrs in favor of something that felt lighter on my skin.

I've gone back to liquid because recently I felt that the powder foundation that I've been using forever was aging me, making me look too dry, among other things.

The first mid-high range foundation I tried was Estee Lauder Double Wear...mainly because I work 10 hrs a night and want my foundation to stay...and it was a keeper. But, I've never paid nearly $40 for a foundation before and it hurts my head to do that. Also, my skin color varies with season and I don't want to pay that much several times a year.

So, I've been on the search for something cheaper...3 different revlon, No7, and some others. But nothing has been working out, so Estee Lauder just may be what I stick with.

And that's not so bad because a little goes a long way for me. Not sure about coverage, because I don't have a whole lot to cover..lucky with the blemishes and such.

Basically, I love the color tone (I was color matched in-store for the Wheat shade, but have to go lighter very soon).I don't know..it just makes my skin look healthier. It gives me a nice glow without looking oily, and for the first time in...well..ever, I don't have to blot shininess away every couple hours.

I apply with Real Techniques Expert Face Brush and my face looks about as smooth and pretty as I think 44 yr old skin can look ;) Maybe give it a try.
