Review: Smashbox Heat Wave Summer 2013

DSC02403

Smashbox has come out with an adorable eye shadow palette and lip gloss set for this summer. Heat Wave eye shadows are a collection of earth inspired hues with lip glosses that are vibrant and juicy. The eye shadow palette has 10 shades that can be used wet or dry and they are extremely creamy and soft. The lip gloss set has 4 bright, highly pigmented lip glosses that go great with the eye shadow palette.

The Heat Wave eye shadow palette has ten shades, five of which are warm and five of which are on the cool side. What is great about them is that they are perfect for mixing together to create a great look. These shades are muted tones, think hot, sultry summer days in the sun. There are three matte shades and seven shimmers. Shades are as follows: (from left to right in the photo) matte cantaloupe, shimmery bronze, matte clay, shimmery sunset orange ,shimmery sunset gold, light shimmery champagne, shimmery darkened silver, shimmery silver blue, shimmery violet, and matte taupe. What is also nice about the palette is it comes with a double sided eye shadow brush, one side fluffy for shading and the other tiny for lining.

I must say that I am extremely happy with the eye shadows in this palette. I have a number of palettes from Smashbox and this one is the best of all the ones I have purchased. The eye shadows are the creamiest and softest, have the least amount of fallout and the pigmentation is excellent. I did mention that the colors in this palette are muted, so if you are not into these type of colors, this palette is not for you. However, when they go on the lid, they look exactly as they do in the pan. These colors are for softer looks, not the in-your-face looks that some might want. But they look very good with the lip gloss set (Yes, I am 100% sure it was planned that way, ha,ha).

Now for the lip gloss set! This is the first time I have ever purchased lip gloss from Smashbox and I must say I am pleasantly surprised. These are pretty pigmented. Yes, they are fairly sticky and tacky on the lip, but I do expect that from a lip gloss. Normally I am all about shimmer. But once in a while I think it is good to get out of your wheelhouse and step into something new. Lately I am loving a bright color with a muted lid. This does the trick! The colors in this set are: Fuchsia Flash (bright reddish pink), VIP Pink (bright pink), Electric Orange (bright orange) and Copper Remix (shimmery bronze). The only one that seems more sheer than the others in the swatches is VIP Pink. Otherwise, they all are fairly pigmented and quite nice. The color is buildable (see below). Pretty sticky though, so if you don’t like a sticky lip gloss, avoid these.

For my look today:

On my skin I used Hourglass Veil Fluid Oil Free Makeup SPF 15 in N0, and Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light. For the eyes: I used the shimmery sunset orange in the crease. In the outer edge of the lid I used the shimmery violet color, to deepen the crease a little I used the matte taupe. On the lid I used the shimmery sunset orange and under the brow I used the light shimmery champagne. I lined my upper lid with an orange-red cream liner from Addiction NY in Red Handed to bring out the green in my eyes and used MAC’s In Extreme Dimension Lash in Black. I used E.L.F.’s blushed/bronzed (just the blush) on my cheeks. The lips are are prepped with E.L.F.’s Lip Definer & Shaper and then I lined them lightly with Cover Girl’s Sublime lip liner (a light brown) and filled them in. It makes a nude base for the lip. I then used the Electric Orange lip gloss and applied two coats. I did think that I would have a brighter look to the lip but because I applied a brownish lip liner I dulled it somewhat.
