Review: Santalia Daily Balancing Serum for Acne

DSC00297It is said that 40-50 million Americans have acne. As an esthetician I have seen what acneic skin can do to the self-esteem and self-confidence of a person. When your skin is ridden with acne, it is hard to feel good about yourself. This happens at any age. The treatments for moderate to severe acne are generally  quite harsh. Benzoyl peroxide, the usual treatment, is drying and prescription treatments can have severe side effects.

Santalia clinical solution products are made from the oil of pharmaceutical grade Sandalwood trees. They treat acne-prone, sensitive skin without over drying the skin. In combating acne you want to do four things: get rid of excess skin cells, combat excess oil on the skin, kill the acne bacteria and get rid of the acne lesions. The products in the regimen will clear, calm and balance the skin. These products are formulated without sulfates, artificial fragrances, dyes, preservatives and harsh benzoyl peroxide. Sandalwood has long been used in Ayurveda, prized for its anti-inflammatory properties, anti-bacterial properties and the fact that it is non-irritating.

There are five products that Santalia has to combat acne. They are: a Daily Cleanser, a Refining Mask, the Daily Balancing Serum and an Intensive Spot Treatment. There is also an Acne Treatment Kit, which is perfect to try out all of the products and get your skin under control. All of the Santalia products are infused with the following extracts: lemon myrtle for antibacterial properties; kakadu plum is the highest source of Vitamin C in the world and helps to make the skin healthier and laminaria digitata, an extract of seaweed which is rich in minerals for balanced skin.
The Daily Cleanser provides gentle exfoliation, with a fresh grapefruit and tangerine oil scent. It also balances oil production. It contains 0.5% salicylic acid and also has extracts of kakadu plum and lemon myrtle.(

The Refining Mask is composed of natural minerals and up to 5% sandalwood powder. It has the kakadu plum, lemon myrtle, laminaria digitata extracts and also zinc extract (good for inflammation). Use up to twice a week. $28.00
The Intensive Spot Treatment helps to calm newly forming breakouts before they emerge. Has a nice aroma of sandalwood and 0.5% salicylic acid plus the odorless onion extract. It also has the extracts mentioned above that are in all of the Santalia products. $25.00

The Daily Balancing Serum is a lightweight serum that is used twice a day. It helps to counter sebum production and prevent blemishes with the 0.5% salicylic acid, 2% sandalwood oil, kakadu plum extract, lemon myrtle and laminaria digitata extract. I have been using the Daily Balancing Serum for several weeks now and I have noticed a significant decrease in acne lesions, such as comedones. I do not have many new ones formed on the chin area, which is where I usually have a large problem with them. Also, there aren’t any hormonal lesions formed. Usually there are at least one to two hormonal lesions formed every month. One thing I can say about the serum is that the odor of it is not as pleasant as other products I have tried. But once it dries down then it is okay, no lingering smell to speak of at all. $38.00

The Acne Treatment Kit ($80.00) contains smaller sizes of all of the products listed above. There was a clinical study done to see how well the Santalia products would perform over other acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide. Dr. Ronald Moy, former president of the AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) and a professor of the Geffen School of Medicine performed an 8 week double blind study that was published in peer reviewed journals. The outcome of this study showed that Santalia products outperform benzoyl peroxide. 73% reported better skin after 7 days. 89.4% reported that after 8 weeks significant skin improvement. Santalia now has clinical significance that it helps acneic skin.

The Daily Balancing Serum ($38.00) is the core of the Santalia system. Because this counteracts sebum production and prevents blemishes, it is the best starter product to have on hand. This helps to get rid of excess skin cells in the follicles and prevents acne blemishes from forming. Next I would suggest trying out the Daily Cleanser ($20.00) and Refining Mask ($28.00), cleansing the skin is key to getting rid of excess dirt and sebum on the skin. The Refining Mask is great at getting rid of excess sebum on the skin, especially good coming into summer here when sebum production is ramped up in your system. Once a week is all you need to help clean out your follicles. It also helps to soothe the skin, getting rid of excess redness. The Intensive Spot Treatment ($25.00) is for the nasty little buggers that might pop up. Going into a regiment it will take up to a month and a half for you to see the most results. The Intensive Spot Treatment can help get the pustules and pimples to calm down, killing the bacteria on the inflamed skin.

Having used a few of the Santalia products now, and linking the clinical data to them, I think that the Santalia products are a good match for mild to moderate acne. These products provide anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and help to reduce sebum production in acneic skin. They are great for any skin and do not contain harsh chemicals. The Daily Balancing Serum reduced comedone production. These products do work. Santalia products are available at www.santaliashop.com.

  1. This sounds like a great range, thankfully I don't get acne anything like I used to when I was younger, but this sounds great if it's something you struggle with! I'd definitely keep it in mind in case I ever have a flare-up. Great review!
