The philosophy purity made simple pore extractor mask is an allure Best of Beauty Award Winner for 2017. If you suffer from blackheads, and I am sure many of you do, then this is the mask for you. Blackheads are essentially sebum and dead skin cells that get trapped in the hair follicle (pore) and eventually oxidize, turning a blackish-brown color on top, the rest of the blackhead underneath is usually a yellowish to white color where the sebum and dead skin has not oxidized. If left there they can become infected turning into a pimple when exposed to acne bacteria. It is important to make sure that you get rid of them (without squeezing them out which can cause infection) before they become infected and also before they distend the top of the hair follicle making it look larger.

Using a mask such as the philosophy purity made simple pore extractor mask is an excellent idea. This mask contains purifying white kaolin, salicylic acid (0.5%), diatomaceous earth and citric acid, (a natural exfoliant which comes from lemons). The creamy, rich mask helps draw out impurities, scrub away dead skin cells and blackheads and shrinks the look of pores. Skin is left to look glowing, refreshed and after two uses will appear virtually blackhead free. 98% of women agreed skin felt smooth and soft with a fresh look and feel. 93% of women agreed skin felt deep-cleaned and pores looked unclogged. It also contains titanium dioxide which helps to calm skin and help soothe any irritation and redness that has developed. *(2-week self-assessment study, 56 women ages 20-35, 2x per week usage)

To use this mask: cleanse and dry skin. Gently massage mask onto clean, dry skin focusing mask onto T-Zone and oiliest areas, where blackheads appear most. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, or until the clay is completely dry. Rinse with warm water only or rinse off with warm water and a wash cloth for extra exfoliation. Another way to get deeper exfoliation is to increase the massage intensity when applying and while removing with water, perform a second massage. This mask is recommended to be used twice a week.

This mask works really well at getting rid of blackheads because it not only exfoliates the skin, helping to get rid of dead skin cells, but the kaolin helps to  draw out the sebum from the pores. White clay (kaolin) and salicylic acid are gold-standard ingredients that have been used forever to help get rid of blackheads: they are natural exfoliants and they get rid of the sebum from the pores. Skin then looks and feels smoother, is deep-cleaned; pores look less visible and blackhead-free.

I would recommend this mask for all skin types, except sensitive skin. This mask can be drying to the skin and therefore I think someone with sensitive skin might not be able to handle it and it also contains salicylic acid, which can be irritating and drying to the skin, even at 0.5%. This mask would be good for dry, normal, combination, oily and acneic skin types. If you have dry skin and have blackheads, I would only use it in the area where you have blackheads, not all over your face, as it is drying. I doubt someone with mature skin would need a mask like this, so I would not recommend it for mature skin types.

This video, from www.philosophy.com, discusses the pore extractor mask (or exfoliating clay mask as it is sometimes called):

I don't have too many blackheads anymore, but my skin still produces sebum, if left alone and I did nothing, I would have them. So for me, this mask is more of a prophylactic measure than a treatment. I like to always prevent more than treat skincare problems. It is always easier to prevent things than to treat them, as the prevention is easier to take care of than the treatment is to fix. This mask does a very good job of exfoliating skin and pulling out the sebum from the pores. It makes your skin feel as if it has been cleaned out by a vacuum cleaner. I like that. When I first tested it a month or two ago, I was shocked at how well it went. My skin felt great, smooth and not too dry (even though I have drier skin in fall and winter). This is an awesome mask and I will continue to use it to prevent sebum buildup in my pores so that I do not get blackheads or treat the blackheads that do develop.
