If you suffer from osteoarthritis, then you will want to read what I am about to write. I suffer from severe osteoarthritis in both my knees. Yes, I am only 47 but it is due to the fact that I had knee surgery on my knees when I was young. My first knee surgery was when I was 19 years old. I had a tear in my medial meniscus (the cartilage that separates your knee joint and keeps the bones from grinding into each other), due to an accident and had to have arthroscopy on my right knee. I was warned that this would lead to early arthritis. Then when I was 24 I had to have a second arthroscopic surgery on my left knee due to a horseshoe shaped tear in the medial meniscus of that knee. It had swollen up so much that I could not even walk and the darn tear did not even show up on an MRI. The doctor was hesitant to do the surgery but after he was done he said he was glad he did. And he warned me that it would likely lead to early arthritis. I also have it in my back too and have had it since I was in my 30's. I was told it was due to genetics. 

Osteoarthritis (or degenerative joint arthritis) is essentially degenerative joint disease that occurs when bone spurs that build up in your joints from wear and tear when the cartilage that is there to protect the bones has worn away and is not there to protect the bones anymore. It is a common chronic condition and affect approximately 27 million Americans. It can affect any joint but usually affects the knees, hips, lower back, small joints of the fingers, base of the thumb and the big toe. In a normal joint, cartilage, a firm rubbery substance covers the end of each bone. Cartilage provides a smooth, gliding surface for joint motion and acts as a cushion between the bones. As we age this substance starts to wear away and breaks down, causing pain, bone spurs, swelling and problems moving the joints. As osteoarthritis gets worse over time, bones can break down and develop spurs. Bits of bone or cartilage may actually break off and float around in the joint causing that "crunchy" noise that you hear. In the body, an inflammatory process occurs and cytokines (proteins) and enzymes develop that further damage the cartilage. In the final stages of osteoarthritis, the cartilage wears away and bone rubs against bone leading to joint damage and more pain*. 

Although osteoarthritis can occur at any age (my case in point, as I have it in my back too), it is most common in those over age 65. Common risk factors include:

• age
• obesity
• previous joint injury
• overuse of the joint
• weak thigh muscles
• genetics

One in two adults will develop symptoms of knee osteoarthritis during their lives. One in four adults will develop symptoms of hip osteoarthritis by age 85. And one in twelve people 60 years or old have hand osteoarthritis. The main treatments for osteoarthritis have been the following:

• steroid injections
• joint replacements
• glucosamine therapy

I have been using Glucosamine Sulfate 1,000mg capsules from Pure Encapsulations to help treat the pain from my knee osteoarthritis and it has been working wonderfully. Normally I would not be able to walk without a cane at all. But I am able to walk around my house without a cane quite easily. Now, I cannot walk long distances or stand for long periods still, and that is due to back problems that I have from fused vertebrae, but my knees have been feeling great since I started using the capsules. The dose is 1 capsule 1-2 times a day with a meal. The swelling in my knees has not gone down but the pain has certainly decreased. I am very thankful for that. 

Glucosamine sulfate supports healthy joints and the body's ability to generate and regenerate connective tissue. Glucosamine is a naturally occurring compound present in joint cartilage that is necessary for the synthesis of what are called proteoglycans, the protein molecules responsible for giving cartilage its strength and resilience. I will continue to keep taking the Glucosamine sulfate since I have had such good results. Prior to using these capsules I had so much trouble walking. Now I feel better, I walk better and just having this much pain relief gives me hope. I was at the point to where I was going to ask for a joint replacement, that is how much pain I was in. These capsules have worked that much. I am truly thankful for them.
