Do you have many patients with acne? Vitiligo? Psoriasis? Well, there is an option for their skin that you may not have heard about but is perfect for your practice TheraLight is a treatment that was developed specifically for the treatment of acne, vitiligo, and psoriasis. The TheraLight treatment was developed in July 2000 to for dermatologists.

This treatment uses phototherapy to treat skin disorders. TheraLight’s targeted phototherapy instrumentation has been patented (US No. 6,413,268 issued 2 July, 2002).  The patent includes the method of using selected lamp-based radiation that can be delivered via a square Handpiece aperture that allows for contiguous skin segment. This is the only system in the world that provides the physician with the option of using targeted UVA or UVB to treat skin disorders. Patents are pending worldwide for this instrumentation. Another key US patent (No. 6,447,537) establishes a platform for the development of future phototherapy products. Because of these patents, and also because of other proprietary technologies under development, TheraLight demonstrates a commitment to understand the underlying photobiology of diseases its products do and will treat.

The light source of the DUALIGHT Phototherapy System is a high-pressure mercury vapor arc lamp. The system emits UVA or UVB through two separate output ports. IV light is delivered to the Handpiece via a liquid filled Lightguide that is highly flexible and also transmits UV light. Because of this, breakage/brittleness that is common with fiber optics is avoided.

The TheraLight machine itself has UVA/UVB capabilities within one system. The narrow bandwidth provides optimal treatment efficiency. Fewer treatment sessions are needed because it has a higher dosing strategy. There are no hot spots, only a uniform dose needed. Healthy skin is not exposed. The machine is stand-alone or adjunct to traditional light box therapies.

What are the benefits of having this system in your practice? It has a low cost, high performance/positive return on the investment. There is also a high positive clinical outcome for the patient and the technology is reliable. The unit is lightweight and portable, so that it can be taken from room to room (no need to have it in any one exam room). Nurses and technicians such as Estheticians can be trained to use the machine. This means that you do not have to spend all of your time doing the treatments but can train your staff to do them.

For the patient, the treatment is a pleasant experience, which is always great! There is no need for the patient to disrobe, making the treatment time shorter. There are fewer treatment sessions needed. Because healthy skin is not exposed, there are minimal side effects.

The DUALIGHT System treats the following conditions: Psoriasis, Vitiligo, Leukoderma, Atopic dermatitis, Seborrheic dermatitis. It is indicated specifically for psoriasis and vitiligo but works well with the other skin disorders listed above. It is also indicated for diseases of the skin that are associated with autoimmune disorders such as lichen sclerosis, morphea, alopecia. The DUALIGHT is very versatile. It has an easy to use interface that can be learned very quickly by physicians and staff. The machine has a built in calibration. It has disposable tips for hygienic use that prevents cross contamination. The unit is small and compact, that takes up little space. It can be taken from room to room.

  1. Looks like a very promising technology. Skin issues are something my family struggles with, so I'm always happy to hear about new treatments, especially ones that provide little-to-no side effects. It's hard to feel good about yourself when your skin is bad, right?
