Q & A With Dermatologist Dr. Douglas Altchek #DouglasAltchek #DrAltchek

Recently I had the opportunity to ask some questions to Dr. Douglas Altchek, a renowned dermatologist. He has a great product line that includes no nonsense products that work great, do their job and are excellent at what they do. I asked several questions to the doctor. I asked questions about aging, sun care and what is at the forefront of skincare today.  His answers are very thorough, discussing not only his excellent products, but the necessary items that we need to help keep our skin looking young, how he feels about dermarollers and what is at the forefront of the skincare field, etc. Read on for some great information from Dr. Altchek.
1. What is the minimum SPF that we should be wearing every day? Should we increase this SPF in the summer because the sun is stronger?
The minimum SPF that should be used for everyday use is 30.  Very often SPF 30 is incorporated in every day products such as the Altchek MD Daily Moisturizer  SPF 30.  In the event that due to summer activities such as all day boating, golf, or tennis, a stronger SPF is advised.  It is also necessary to reapply if you participate in extensive swimming or sweating.
2. Which is better, a mineral sunscreen or a chemical sunscreen? Why?
Although both are effective sunscreens, there have been concerns about chemical sunscreens.  Mineral sunscreens or physical sunscreens such as zinc oxide or titanium are not believed to penetrate the skin.  Non-mineral suncreens such as octisalate, oxybenzone, and avobenzone, are considered to be hormone disruptors, allergy producing, and capable of penetrating the skin.  These have been used since 1978 without any scientific proof of their causing damage.
3. What exactly is a peptide? Why does it work on aging skin so well and what does it do for the skin?
Peptides are proteins derived of amino acids.  They are essential building blocks of proteins. They are moisture binding agents of the skin and are thought to help the skin repair itself.  They also may help in anti-aging.  For this reason, I incorporate peptides in the Altchek MD line.  The products which contain peptides are:  Night Treatment Restorative Treatment, Daily Moisturizer, and Brightening Serum.
4. Are AHA's still considered to be very helpful for aging skin? Would you recommend AHAs/BHAs for aging skin?
AHA's and BHAs are at the forefront of skin care regimens today.  They are the best daily skin care home treatment that encourage exfoliation and rejuvenation of the skin.  Although topical chemical peels have been in use for decades, if not centuries, the AHA's have been refined for at home use.  Cleopatra used glycolic acids derived from grapes to create one of the earliest AHA's.  The AltchekMD products which contain glycolic acids are:  Brightening Serum, Daily Exfoliating Cleanser,  and Glycolic Renewal Pads.
5. How do you feel about Dermarollers? Do you think they really do any good? Do they actually make "channels" in the skin that can transport skincare into the skin or is it hype? Do they cause an increase in collagen production?
The Derma Roller is a new devise which is purported to be effective in treating wrinkles, aging, and hair loss.  They are promoted to increase the collagen and elastin in the skin.  Although this devise may give the user a sense that something is being done for aging or hair loss, this has not been verified in double blind, double ended clinical studies.
6. What is the most new and exciting ingredient in skincare that everyone is talking about right now?
Resveratrol is a relatively new ingredient in skincare, although it has been used for thousands of years in the form of wine, a known anti-oxidant.  The Altchek MD skin line has several products which contain resveratrol and has been shown to be effective in retarding premature aging and wrinkling.  These are: Brightening Serum, Night Treatment Restorative Serum, and Daily Exfoliating Cleanser.
7. What is the most natural cosmetic procedure that a woman could do to keep herself looking younger without having to look like she had work done?
The conservative use of fillers and botulin toxin to the wrinkles and lines of the face gives the most natural appearance to the face.  It is most important not to overdo the use of these products, which may give way to a "frozen forehead" and flattened expressionless face.  I very often have to convince my patients that "less is more" in treating wrinkling and aging.  Nothing ages a woman more than overtreatment.
8. What are you excited about in the field of skincare Dr. Altchek?
I am excited about the use of stem cells to regenerate organs, including the skin, the largest organ in the body.  I believe that in the future, stems cells will be used to create truly dramatic, rapid, and effective skincare topical treatments.
