Have you ever heard the old adage that "true beauty comes from within"? Well it is true. These days the majority of successful skincare companies are using more natural ingredients and are almost completely natural and organic themselves. Natural and organic skincare is the current trend and I see no signs of it fading anytime soon. Why? Because it is better for one physically and for one's health. A natural lifestyle and a healthy and balanced diet makes for radiant skin. Good genes help too but good skin comes from having all the right combinations. There are products you can make at home that are often very good and will help to supplement some of the products you buy at the store. In fact many products in the store started out as products that were made at home. This is where The Complete Guide To Natural Homemade Beauty Products & Treatments comes in

This book is a compilation of recipes that help you make effective use of nature's bounty, so you can prepare your own beauty treatments for complete skin, body and hair care. You will be amazed at how inexpensive it is to customize products, resulting in the ultimate pampering of your skin. Once you get the basic pantry down, you will have the basis of the ingredients to take care of your skin naturally. This book includes recipes along with lifestyle tips that will enhance your body from head to toe using aromatic and medicinal plants, flowers, fruits and essential oils.

There is a wealth of information in this book, from how to perfume your body and home with essential oils, fruits and plants to how to make masks with natural ingredients. It is your best ally for personal care. You can harness nature's greatest possibilities. Such as creating beauty products that are incredibly effective at helping you achieve a younger and healthier appearance, all with a rational, balanced and harmonious approach. The author, Amelia Ruiz, goes beyond the cosmetics and treatments to teach you how to feel satisfied with your appearance, and how to enhance your positive qualities through exercise, diet, rest and a life in harmony with your natural biorhythms. There are 175 recipes to try out in the book. I tried just a few.

Here is a basic anti-acne mask recipe to try:
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt (use Greek for thicker yogurt)
  • 1 tbsp. grated carrot
  • 1 tsp. cornstarch
1. In a small bowl, mix together yogurt, carrot and cornstarch until well combined.
2. Spread mixture all over face and neck (avoiding eye area) and let sit for about 20 minutes.
3. Rinse off mixture with cool water and pat face with towel to dry.

Rose Water Lotion

  • 1 tbsp. Rose Water (see pg. 178)
  • 2 tsp. liquid glycerin (see pg.186)
  • 1/2 tsp. liquid honey
  • 1/2 tsp. white vinegar
  • 20 drops lemon juice
1. In jar combine ingredients. Seal tightly and shake vigorously until well mixed and creamy.
2. Smooth lotion all over hands. Store jar in a cool, dark place for up to 2 months.

There are so many recipes that I cannot possibly share them all. I will say that these recipes do require you to purchase things that you likely do not have, such as essential oils, glycerin and some other ingredients. But if you are serious about making some skin, hair and body products for yourself, then this is a great book for you. It really does have great recipes that are fairly easy to make and use. The products you make will in all likelihood be somewhat less expensive than what you purchase at SEPHORA or Ulta Beauty. But it does take an investment to get there first. However, it is worth it for some of the homemade recipes.

I have a lot of essential oils and yogurt around plus some fruits and vegetables so I can see myself making some of the masks. I love masks. Plus I have eczema on my neck and hands. I would like to try anything with Greek yogurt. It has natural lactic acid in it that helps exfoliate and something that alleviates inflammation of the skin. Once in Greece I received a horrid sunburn then laid for three days with Greek yogurt on my back to heal the sunburn. It helped immensely and healed it without the skin peeling or without blistering of the skin. Things like this make me realize that natural ingredients do work quite well.

The Complete Guide To Natural Homemade Beauty Products & Treatments retails for $24.95 in the US and Canada. It is 288 pages long. The book is available from www.robertrose.ca, www.barnesandnoble.com and www.amazon.com.
